  1. Style of art and architecture characterized
  2. by extravagance in ornament, asymmetry of
  3. design, and great expressiveness.
  4. It dominated European art for most of the
  5. 17th century, with artists like the painter
  6. Rubens and the sculptor Bernini.
  7. In architecture it often involved large-scale
  8. designs, such as Bernini's piazza in Rome and
  9. the palace of Versailles in France. In music
  10. the Baroque era lasted from about 1600 to
  11. 1750, and its major composers included
  12. Monteverdi, Vivaldi, J S Bach, and Handel. In
  13. painting, Caravaggio, with his bold use of
  14. light and forceful compositions, was an early
  15. exponent, but the Carracci family was more
  16. typical of the early Baroque style, producing
  17. grandiose visions in ceiling paintings that
  18. deployed illusionistic painting of florid
  19. architectural decoration. In sculpture, the
  20. greatest master was Bernini, whose Ecstasy of
  21. St Theresa 1645-52 (Sta Maria della Vittoria,
  22. Rome) is a fine example of overt
  23. emotionalism. Most masterpieces of the new
  24. style emerged in churches and palaces in
  25. Rome, but it soon spread through Europe. The
  26. Swiss art historian Burckhardt was the first
  27. to use the term `baroque'.
